Organic food used to be a scarce commodity once upon a time, with only the uber-rich being able to pay the extra bucks for it. Moreover, it was found only at those health food stores, which would market it accordingly. It was almost as if natural and environment friendly foods were meant only for the rich.

That seems to have changed today. Even your local grocer could now be stocking up on organic produce. The people who turn towards organic food are generally looking for ways to ensure that the earth is not being tampered with and is being treated well; or it could be their way of looking for safer and more natural foods.

But today, when the size of a dollar is shrinking, is organic produce worth going the extra mile?

Buy Organic: Buy Peaches

It is a well established fact that all of us cannot afford to buy all of our food requirements in organic form. Organic food is known to cost around 50%-100% more than the conventionally grown food items.

According to experts, it would be beneficial to spend more of your ‘money for organic food’ on produce. They are the most likely to contain pesticides. According to the Environmental Working Group, which is an NGO in Washington, D.C., it would be beneficial to go organic on fruits like the peaches, which generally are doused with high levels of pesticides.

Buy Organic: Buy Apples

If you choose to invest in organic apples, it might be a wise way of spending those pennies set aside for organic produce. If you cannot invest in organic apples, fret not! You could buy conventionally grown apples and ensure that you scrub their skin properly. Do this under running water; and you could rub off the pesticide residues.

Apples are a great source of fiber and are also high on Vitamin C which helps in boosting the immune system. A medium sized apple could contain anywhere from 90 – 95 calories. This count makes them a healthier alternative to otherwise sweeter snacks.

Buy Organic: Buy Celery

This is a low calorie veggie which is high on the crunch factor. It possesses Vitamins A, K and C. It is high on potassium, folate and manganese as well.

Even if you do not invest in some organic celery, you could do your bit by washing the stalks well before you consume them. One large stalk of celery should give you about 10 calories.

Buy Organic: Buy Nectarines

This fruit is extremely juicy and at the same time, is rich in its Vitamins A and C, potassium and niacin. An average sized nectarine would contain about 65 calories. Scrub the peel or remove it to avoid ingesting pesticide residues.

Buy Organic: Buy Strawberries

Vitamin C is found in abundance in strawberries. Organic strawberries are way better than the ones you find conventionally grown. These strawberries will be fresher and thus, healthier for your body.

Most expectant mothers are known to secretly harbor the hope that soon after they give birth to that pretty baby, they’ll be back on the road to fitness. All that baby fat will just melt away and it’ll reveal a better looking ‘you’. Unfortunately this is far from true. You aren’t going to be in pre-baby shape even three months after the baby is along. It is going to take so much longer than that.

We aren’t saying this to scare you. It’s just our way of preparing you to deal with the truth. Setting impossible and unrealistic goals for your weight loss and fitness standards is not a good idea. It might be highly impossible for you to achieve what you plan; and this, in turn, will end up leaving you depressed and dejected that those weight loss plans didn’t work out.

We’d prefer you have a realistic approach to weight loss and this would help you get physically fit, even if you don’t look like your memories of the pre-baby days.

10+10+10 = 30

Miss those uninterrupted 30 minute sessions of exercise? Those were the good times, weren’t they? Those are also, what you will now call, ‘memories of the past’. You will no longer be privy to getting such long time frames to yourself. According to the latest researches, you will end up doing the same amount of cardio even if you exercise for 10 minutes around 3 times in a day. If you have a jump rope or some weights handy at home, just keep them around. You don’t know when you’ll be able to squeeze in those 10 minutes along the way. It is perfectly okay for you to want to leave all those dirty formula bottles in the sink while you drop to the floor for a few pushups.

You’re your own woman

Remember, you’re an individual and you must have your own stands. Don’t compare yourself with anyone else. So what if Sandra next door found it easier to lose that post pregnancy weight, it doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong. Getting back in shape post a delivery would depend on a number of factors – the kind of shape you were in before the pregnancy, the genetics in play and the kind of complications you underwent during childbirth. Remember, you took 9 months to have that baby; give yourself some time to get back in shape as well.

Going back to being a child

While your kid moves around, begin mimicking his energy and his movements. Children are constantly bouncing around and come across as being a bundle of excitement and activity. You could try playing catch and tag while your baby grows older. You could try wearing your workout gear when you start taking the kid to the park. If the baby is still young, you could try brisk walking with the stroller, if you have a good pathway.

If you believe that weight loss is all about disciplining yourself and self-control, you might be right. But the question is, are you completely right? If you go to the gym regularly; and do not eat even a single morsel of junk food, it might help you hit that ‘ideal’ weight even faster. But then again, will it let you stay there?

Being ‘perfect’ might actually, in most cases, backfire; and how! If you end up breaking one of the rules on a day when you’re at your weakest best, you might actually end up throwing in the towel and eating junk food for the rest of eternity. Instead of overdoing it, you might want to have a look at these strategies. They will help you in making the transformation from the ‘ideal’ to ‘reality’.

Eating in the Evening -

Your thoughts:

Eating after 7 p.m. will sabotage my weight loss program. I shouldn’t eat in the evenings.

Reality check:

The only thing that is capable of sabotaging your weight loss plans is the over consumption of calories. The timing of the meal isn’t as binding as the calorie limit is. If you tend to have the cravings post-dinner, then you might want to save up on calories earlier in the day, so that you can munch on something post dinner.

The Big Breakfast Helps –

Your thought:

Breakfast holds the key of success when it comes to my weight loss and control. I must cook and eat my breakfast at home every single morning.

Reality check:

It isn’t of utmost importance that you race your way to the kitchen every morning in order to fuel up a good breakfast. You could aim to eat a breakfast almost 2 hours after you’ve woken up as well. An elaborate breakfast isn’t essential. You could stick to something as basic as a bowl of oatmeal. A simple skimmed latte on the side would do the trick. An easy on-the-go kind of breakfast could include a protein bar and a piece of fresh fruit. You could opt for an elaborate breakfast over the weekends, when you have the luxury of time at hand!

Completely cut out the Fast Food –

Your thought:

Fast food is every fitness freak’s nightmare. You cannot touch fast food if you want to control your weight. It is the kind of meal that is loaded with calories and is dripping fat.

Reality check:

When it comes to fast food, the key lies with portion servings. If you choose to make a trip to a fast food joint, you might want to substitute the cola with a sugar-free soda or some water. Stick to the 400 calories marker, and you’re allowed to do this once in a blue moon. It will help you prevent the concept of ‘deprivation’. This way you’re less likely to lose control and give in to ‘overeating’.

Setting Deadlines for Weight Loss –

Your thought:

I have to lose a good 20 pounds in a matter of 5 weeks. I have to stick it out and achieve this goal. This is the stuff that real challenges are made up of.

Reality check:

Weight loss that is achieved on a rapid basis isn’t generally sustainable. You have to ensure that you set a goal that is modest; and ensure that you re-evaluate it from time to time. Always remember that even weight loss programs have ‘honeymoon’ periods; i.e. the first two weeks are always the best. You begin to see the difference when you are in this time frame. Aim for a five pounds in the first 2 weeks and anything that you lose beyond that should be considered a bonus. Remember, not gaining weight is also a form of success when you’re indulging in weight control and weight loss.

Sugar-free foods may perhaps seem like the easiest option when it comes to cutting down on your sugar intake, as well as keeping an eye on those calories that go in. Sugar free-food may actually add some amount of flexibility to an otherwise rigid (and bland) meal plan. But remember one thing before you bring it on; ‘There’s nothing like a free lunch in this world’. This would mean that you don’t have a free ride when gorging on these items. The trick lies in knowing when these items become a smart pick and when they should plain be dished out of the window!

Knowing the Truth -

The moment people get to know of your status (you are ‘diabetic’; Sshhh!) they’ll begin pouncing on you with the newest offerings that the food market has to offer – a number of tricks and treats that are focused specifically on the diabetic consumer. There is never a dearth of variety herein. You’ll find everything from sugar-free cocoa, to sugar-free cookies. They will generally be doused with other ingredients such as flour, milk or fruits which end up counting towards your carbohydrate allowance for life.

No Sugar Added v/s Sugar-Free –

According to the government labeling, sugar-free products are allowed to have less than 0.5 grams of sugar in each serving; whereas, no-sugar added foods are supposed to have no added sugar at all. In most cases, these foods will have sweeteners like sorbitol, which fall under the category of sugar alcohols. These sugar alcohols generally end up adding to the carb count (definitely not as much as sugar) but they do, nonetheless. Many of the products available in the market today would even contain no-calorie sweeteners; the sorts like aspartame, acesulfame potassium and sucralose. These do not add to the carbs unlike their sugar alcohols cousins.

In most cases, the no-sugar foods and the sugar-free versions will actually end up making them smart choices, given the fact that you’re not really dousing on the carbohydrates. But then again, the flipside is that these versions are generally going to burn a hole in your pocket, given the fact that they come at extremely steep prices.

And always remember this one simple truth, if you like the regular version of your food and that’s the taste you want in your mouth, then you could switch a full portion of the sugar-free version with a smaller portion of the regular version. This way your taste buds are happy; and so is your tummy.

101 The Sugar Alcohol –

Most sugar alcohols will have names that end in ‘ol’. That’s the easiest way to spot them. The unfortunate part is that our bodies aren’t very good at absorbing sugar alcohol. So on an average, the body will end up taking in half of the calories and carbohydrates of sugars which will end up affecting their blood glucose.

The flipside is that consuming too much of these sweeteners will end up giving you side effects that trigger digestive disorders. Diarrhea is a common problem that is known to crop up.

If you want to add up these sweeteners and their effect on your body, you might want to calculate the label on each product for their nutritional value. It should be able to tell you how much sugar alcohol you’re going to take in. If you end up consuming over 5 grams of sugar alcohol with each serving, you would have to subtract around half of these grams from the total amount of carbohydrate grams; and this will give you your carb count.

The Sugar Alcohol Quick Math:

The total carb grams – half of the sugar alcohol grams = the carb count

There is a way to go about eating healthily, and the one thing all experts agree on is that it involves eating in moderation and having a variety of foods in what is a “balanced diet”. That entails getting as many calories as you need and no more and not overdoing anything. Sounds arduous? You’re not alone, and if you find the thought of hitting upon a healthy meal plan intimidating you might want to read on to find out more about coming up with a healthy diet plan that you can enjoy.

Make sure you get a variety of nutrients

There are more than 40 nutrients you need on a daily basis, and no one food item has it all. Importantly, you need to figure out your calorie intake first so you can decide what combination you can come up with to serve yourself best. The food guide pyramid is a good indicator of how to structure your plan.

Love those veggies and fruits!

You need 3 to 5 servings of vegetables a day and something like 2-4 servings of fruit, and odds are you’re not having this at all. Okay, so it’s not as fun as pigging out with some pizza or pasta or burger, but give it time and you might just fall for it. Look at cookbooks for ways to give staid food items an interesting spin.

Watch those scales

Your ideal weight can be arrived upon after factoring in your age, sex and height and in some cases even your heredity comes into it. Keep an eye on that body fat index too for it directly affects your blood pressure and cardiac health. Coming up with a way to successfully manage your weight is critical to successful weight management as being too heavy or too light is not good for you.

There are no good or bad foods

Contrary to what you’ve been told, there is no such thing as a good or bad food item. Dig into that ice cream or pop up your favorite pack of chips every now and again but have it in moderation. Anything in excess is bad for you.

It is imperative that you choose your diet bases on what you need and your dietary habits, not by hearsay or by decising what is good or bad by popular perception. Everyone loves to indulge in some chips or fried foods that would have nutrionists shrieking in agony. Remember though, that everything in moderation is good, don’t overdo anything else it will do you in. Strike a healthy balance and vary your food intake to achieve overall better health. You’ll feel better about it and you’ll be happier you almost haven’t cut anything out at all. Which brings us very nicely to our last point…

Eat in moderation

There is little sense in over-eating and piling on the food, instead pick foods you want and like and keep your health up. The recommended amount of cooked meat to be served should not exceed a size greater than a deck of playing cards, and while that may not be enough for you, try and stick to reasonable limits. Gluttony is dubbed a vice with good reason.

It is imperative that you choose your diet bases on what you need and your dietary habits, not by hearsay or by decising what is good or bad by popular perception.

In order to compete with modern world, we push ourselves to last extent. The hectic schedule and faulty lifestyle have lead to many serious ailments. This generation has introduced numerous ailments that are due to excessive tension and worries. We are just running behind material things, but have lost mental peace somewhere deep within us. According to survey in US, half of the populations are suffering from the trouble of blood pressure.

Medical science researchers have mentioned this disease as silent killer. Unhealthy living styles have increased the pressure physically and mentally. These have increased the level of adrenaline in blood stream, which causes the blood pressure to rise. As, our heart applies force to pump out blood into large arteries- pressure is formed- which is known as blood pressure. Our body requires a certain level of blood pressure to keep circulatory system functioning properly. High blood pressure causes when the level of blood pressures rises above the normal level. As the pressure increases the blood stream, it contracts small blood vessels- capillaries. The increase in contraction increases more pressure on heart to pump required blood.

If the pressure reaches highest level, it increases level of cardiac arrest. Excessive stress, imbalance in hormonal system, extreme intake of sodium, and obesity are main reasons for high blood pressure. You need to keep a proper control on the level of our blood pressure. The researchers have found out many good solutions on your problems. Apart from all medication, you can definitely rely on some home remedies. These home remedies are easily available throughout the world and possesses no negative effects on the body.

Did you know that most of those wrinkles, crow’s feet and dark circles had a lot to do with stress? Stress and anger are common aspects of our day to day life; and seem almost inevitable with the kind of lifestyles we lead these days. But the truth of the matter remains at this – you should learn how to play it cool even when matters seem to be heating up around you. Keep these tips in mind the next time you come across such situations; and help yourself stay younger for longer.

1. Get Acquainted With Your Triggers –

It is essential that you learn to identify your triggers. If a conversation about global warming, or long distance relationships or even recession is what causes you grief, then it is best that you walk away when such a conversation begins. All you have to do is put your foot down and depart for a while.

2. Shut Those Eyes for a While –

The only way to regain the internal equilibrium would be to shut your eyes for a while; and thus shut the world out. This will help you calm down faster than you can imagine. Sometimes it is absolutely essential to let go of everything else; and focus inwards.

3. Get a Regular Dose of ‘Alone Time’ –

This one can be the most challenging of all these tips. Especially even more if you’re at work most of the day or if you have extremely energetic and creative kids. But then again, most of us need our own quota of private time. This time is what we need in order to regenerate the nervous system.

4. Becoming One With Nature –

This one might turn out to be quite the lifesaver for most of you. Getting out for only even an hour each day can help you see the difference. Being out there; and becoming one with nature could help you turn into calm and the beautiful from being the cynical, uptight person you are while at work.

5. Water Calms Your Senses –

Water has more than one way in calming those nerves. You could keep drinking water to keep your calm; or walk close to a water body and feel the calm take over you. You could get into some water, take a swim and let those blues drain away. There is a very good reason why hot springs and tubs are extremely popular amongst people.

6. Breathe in. Breathe out–

This is perhaps the absolute foundation of sanity. This helps in increasing and regulating the oxygen that is vital in the survival of the body. Oxygen also helps in eliminating the buildup of toxins in our system. Put into practice the ‘Four Square’ method of breathing which will help you reduce and control your anxiety –

Breathe in and hold till you count till four.

Exhale slowly while you count four (purse your lips while you do so).

Rest for another four counts.

Take a couple of breaths normally.

Repeat from the beginning.

You could alternatively try listening to some music, or reading a good book – whatever it is that works for you. The bottom-line is clear – Keeping it calm can help you stay younger for longer.

A new future awaits the drugs for diabetes according to a discovery by researchers.

The latest research in the United States on mice helps get an insight in the role bone plays in regulation of insulin. This helps the cells of the body in taking in glucose. And in people with type 2 diabetes both these processes are non-functional.

Research Findings:

Research showed that during the process of bone resorption, when the old bone gives way for new growth, a hormone called osteocalcin is released which aids in the production of insulin. Thus this helps the cells to take up glucose. This find was spear headed by Dr Gerard Karsenty and his dignified colleagues from the Columbia University Medical Center in New York.

Scientists have great curiosity and anxiety as to what factors influence the regulation of insulin. These receptors of insulin seem to be omnipresent in the body. An example is the Osteoblasts which are the cells responsible for releasing the hormone osteocalcin which are integral to the formation of bone. Gerard Karsenty and his team had been successful in linking the hormone with regulation of glucose in 2007.

A cycle of processes:

The research then had shown that the hormone Osteocalcin switches on the production of insulin in the pancreas and causes improved absorption of glucose by the cells of the body. These functions are impaired in the individuals affected by diabetes type 2.

The Osteoblasts starts the process of bone resorption and causes the environment to become acidic. This causes decarboxylation and switches on more osteocalcin which leads to production of insulin. Studies also shed light on a fact that insulin also favors the process of bone resorption. So this seems to be a ‘feel-forward’ loop of processes which trigger each other.

Treating Diabetes and Osteoporosis:

The result of the findings adds further strength to the idea that regulating the levels of the hormone osteocalcin in the body can help treat diabetes. This research has further implications in patients of osteoporosis as well. The common drugs used to treat osteoporosis slow down bone resorption which can lead to glucose intolerance. Hence these are important findings which can pave the way for new drugs.

Yoga is very beautiful exercise that provides sufficient amount of energy to the body. It is boost your immune system, thus allowing you to stay healthy and happy. Regular practice of yoga helps you in keeping respiratory tracts healthy. It has been influential to practice yoga on daily basis.

But sometimes, people push them to extreme level and thus suffer from injuries. Stretching yourself to last limit might result in stretch injuries, thus leads to further problems. In fact sometimes, you might even experience cramps. Numerous reasons result in cramps, which makes you uncomfortable. Out of many reasons, deficiency of potassium is chief reason for cramps during yoga sessions. Consume one banana before starting your daily yoga poses. Keep a check on your improvement level. Second main reasons for cramps during yoga session is wrong way of conducting the yoga asanas. Practicing yoga asanas in wrong manner may also result in cramps in legs. In order to stay away from cramps, try massaging your leg five minutes before your exercise. Warming up will boost your circulation system. Stop conducting pose that is uncomfortable for you. It is better to stay from such yoga poses, practice asanas that make you comfortable and healthy.

Cramps during yoga asanas are generally due to outcome of imbalanced coordination among joints. Certain times, while practicing yoga exercises difficult plantar flexion of the foot might result in severe cramps in arch region. Many people with flat feet experience shrunken arches and grumble about cramps in middle of exercises. In many cases, the muscles of leg gets tired due to continuous movements, thus it is essential that you lessen the amount for exercise. Flat feet individuals also need to focus on uplifting the arches with use of feet and leg muscles. Try using ice pack to reduce the intensity of cramps. Massage ice pack on your leg and feet for seven to ten minutes, till the skin get red. This indicates that red blood cells have been warmed up and they will reduce cramps.

Even imbalanced level of fluids in body, electrolytes, salts, or dehydration can increase the intensity of muscle cramps in body. if muscle cramps occur while conducting powerful yoga, bikram yoga, or hot yoga then you might have practiced yoga in hot weather. Practicing yoga in hot climate will drain your fluid levels in the body. They also reduce minerals and salt proportion in the body. Reduction in all these nutrients will increase the intensity of cramps in leg muscles

Always have a check on your shoes which can also cramps in your legs. Do not wear shoes tight or tie their lace tightly, which will clot the blood and lead to severe cramps. While you are carrying out long duration of yoga poses, do not keep your shoes tight. Certain times, it is difficult to find out the cause of cramps even after managing proper precautions.

In such conditions, it may be essential to take some mediation that will reduce your pain. Even nutritional deficiencies can cause such problems, thus consume nutritional food before your yoga sessions. Drink ample of water to keep you hydrated and healthy during your yoga sessions.

Who said that waiting to get to the gym is the only way to lose weight and keep fit? There are a zillion other ways of getting similar results, and when you’re out in the open.

Remember how we’d run around all day as kids and actually manage to burn more calories than we now do on a treadmill. The answer is simple, running around in the open is what gave us that feeling – the freedom, the greenery – we were one with nature.

Switch back to doing exactly that and you’ll notice how you don’t only improve your physique, but actually score higher on overall well being.

Hike it up –

This is perhaps the simplest advice we have to offer. If you have a dog, take him/her also along with you. It is the best steady cardio workout for you. Asphalt roads can get boring after a while; but the woods and their trails have so much to offer every single day. Let the trees act as your canopy as you walk through, inhaling the fresh air.

Cardio when barefoot –

Don’t have a forest nearby? Fret not! If you have a beach in the vicinity, that’s good enough. You could opt for a run down the beach; but we suggest you ditch the shoes. Running barefoot on the sand is a great workout for your body. Plus, given the fact that it is challenging, it ends up giving you a workout in 10 minutes flat. This activity is great for your arches, leg muscles, and ankles. The biggest advantage is that you can wade into the water later; and cool yourself down.

There’s a kayak on the journey –

And you thought that it would never have been possible to lose weight while you sat firmly on your behind? Think again. If you choose paddling in a kayak, you might just end up doing that. This kind of a workout helps in building up on your core strength and is great exercise for your arm muscles. When you’re ready, hit the creek, armed with a kayak.

Soak up the sun while you relax some –

When the gym gets too sticky for you to handle, choose a lake side or a beach to perform your yoga routines. Do this in the morning; and you’ll also derive the adequate amount of Vitamin D that you need from the sun. The water body will also help have a calming effect on you, which will enhance your breathing techniques.

Volleyball gives you strong arms –

If you indulge in a little competition, you won’t even know how time flies off. Beach Volleyball is a sport that involves a lot of vigorous arm movements; and is thus great for strengthening your arm muscles. Pick up the ball, set up a net, and call some friends over to the beach.
